This is a collection of David’s favorite songs from the Maritime tradition. It features a mix of traditional and contemporary material from a variety of sea topics including whaling, fishing, pirating, wrecks, reflection, death and coming home. Unlike the Flight of Time cd, this is an all vocal project but still includes most of David’s instruments. Several of these songs also appear in the Boston-by-Sea show that David is working on as Music Director and is currently perfoming on a regular basis. (see his homepage)”The Nantucket Sleighride” features Kent Allyn on piano, guitar and fretless bass; Lissa Schneckenberger on fiddle, with David Surette and Bill Smith playing additional guitars, and Ellen Epstein on vocals.

Proudly introducing his daughter, Linnea, David presents some of his favorite songs accompanied by his favorite musicians. Stepping out from under his Maritime hat these songs cover a wide span of topics, from the Clydesdale horses to the coal mines of Scotland; from the struggling fishermen to a hopeful song of Spring; and a new instrumental arrangement of Spered Holvedel. And a few “chestnuts” including Stephen Foster’s Hard Times and a tribute to John Langstaff, Cecil Sharp’s collected version of John Barleycorn.

This is the latest addition to David’s growing collection of Maritime songs. What makes this project different from his last Maritime CD is there is a real mix of traditional and contemporary songs. There are also two commissioned works that David has written commemorating the 150th anniversary of the construction of two Boston built Clipper Ships. David is especially excited about the new collaboration with Texas-based ‘cellist, Max Dyer. And of course the continued partnership with Kent Allyn and David Surette. Special appearance by the CedarHouse Boys is a rather inviting addition. All of these songs tell a story about a time in history to which David feels a direct connection. As a Maritime educator performing in schools David is constantly looking for “gems” that bring the history to life. Here is just a sampling. I hope you enjoy it.
